How to recognize a financial pyramid and avoid falling into a trap

393 viewing

Financial pyramids are becoming increasingly sophisticated. They disguise themselves as investment platforms, online courses, betting services, or IT projects. To avoid losing your money, it’s important to know the key warning signs.

What should raise concern

The Agency for Regulation and Development of the Financial Market highlights several signals that may help identify a pyramid scheme:

• participants are asked to make an initial contribution;
• promised returns are far above the market average;
• aggressive advertising, especially on social media;
• bonuses are offered for bringing in new members;
• there is no transparent information about the company;
• the organization lacks a license to attract deposits or to operate in the securities market.

If the system pays earlier participants with the money of new ones, it’s a typical pyramid scheme.

Why it’s dangerous

Organizers use psychological tricks and digital tools to build trust and quickly attract funds. Once the money flow dries up, the project disappears — along with investors’ savings.

Such schemes often disguise themselves as legitimate businesses, from “guaranteed winning bets” to “high-yield startup investments.” Behind the attractive promises, there is neither a license nor a real product.

What the law says

In Kazakhstan, organizing or participating in a financial pyramid is punishable under Article 217 of the Criminal Code. The maximum penalty is up to 12 years in prison, confiscation of property, and a lifetime ban from certain professions or activities.

How to protect yourself

Check a company’s license on the website of the Agency for Regulation and Development of the Financial Market. Don’t transfer money via private links and don’t trust anyone who promises “guaranteed profits.”

Investments cannot be quick or effortless. If the offer looks too good to be true — that’s already a reason to say no.
