Minimum wage in Kazakhstan may increase to 150,000 ₸

Kazakhstan is considering raising the minimum wage (MW) nearly twofold, from the current 85,000 ₸ to 150,000 ₸. This was announced by First Vice Minister of National Economy Azamat Amrin on the sidelines of the government meeting.

What the government proposes

The increase is being discussed as part of a broader effort to raise household incomes. According to Amrin, the issue is already under review:

“First of all, we are considering the minimum wage. Yes, this issue is on the table.”

At present, the minimum wage in Kazakhstan is 85,000 ₸. The government is orienting toward international benchmarks, where minimum wages often reach around 50% of the median salary.

“Our goal is to bring the minimum wage to 150,000 tenge in the near future,” he added.

When changes may happen

No specific timeline has been set yet. The decision will depend on the state budget and government revenues.

“I can’t say when we will reach 150,000 tenge. It’s a complex issue and depends on budget capacity,” Amrin said.

If budget revenues continue to show positive dynamics, the government may have the financial capacity to implement the increase.

Why it matters

The minimum wage affects not only employee income but also several related indicators:

• sets the lower bound for monthly wages

• used to calculate taxes and social contributions

• impacts the size of certain benefits

• defines the wage floor across the economy

An increase in the minimum wage typically leads to adjustments in pay levels across sectors, especially in lower-paid jobs.

What it means for businesses and employees

If approved:

• employers will need to raise salaries for workers earning the minimum wage

• mandatory social payments will increase

• workers with lower incomes will see higher base earnings

For now, the proposal remains under discussion and will depend on economic conditions.
