eGov Mobile launches product labeling verification feature

224 viewing

A new feature for verifying product authenticity via digital code has been launched in the eGov Mobile app. The service is free and allows users to access product information from the national digital labeling system.

The functionality is implemented on the basis of the Naqty Onim service.

How the verification works

Users can scan a Data Matrix code in the eGov Mobile app. After scanning, the following information is displayed:

• product authenticity;
• manufacturer details;
• key characteristics;
• production date.

“Currently, users can verify products from categories most vulnerable to counterfeiting, including medicines, tobacco products and footwear. When scanning a digital code (Data Matrix code) in the eGov Mobile application, information about the product’s authenticity, manufacturer, main characteristics and production date is displayed,” the press service of the Electronic Government of Kazakhstan reported.

Products can be checked both in-store before purchase and later at home.

Which products can be verified

The feature applies to goods subject to mandatory digital labeling and containing a Data Matrix code.

At this stage, verification is available for categories with a higher risk of counterfeiting:

• medicines;
• tobacco products;
• footwear.

What to consider when verifying medicines

For medicines, an additional condition applies: the product must belong specifically to the category of medicinal products and fall under mandatory digital labeling requirements.

“For medicinal products, it is also important that the item belongs specifically to the category of medicinal drugs. When verifying medicines, it is necessary to take into account their production date: products manufactured before July 1, 2024 are not subject to mandatory digital labeling and may not appear in the system when scanned. The absence of a verification result in this case does not indicate that the product is illegal or counterfeit,” the agency clarified.

This means that the absence of information in the app does not always indicate a violation. When verifying a product, it is important to consider its production date and the applicable labeling requirements.

Why this matters for businesses and consumers

The launch of the feature increases market transparency and provides consumers with a tool to quickly verify the legality of products. For businesses, it serves as an additional mechanism to monitor the circulation of labeled goods and reduce the risk of counterfeit distribution.
